What do I do for fun?
Music
I listen to CDs, LPs and cassettes.
Mostly 80's and early 90's indie/alternative/pop/rock/goth.
Like most people over the age of 30, I don't think much of current pop/
ambient/trance/dance/hip-hop/garage music that young people listen to :-)
In no particular order, I like:
Sisters of Mercy, Cocteau Twins, Throwing Muses, Pixies, Curve,
Madder Rose, Voice of the Beehive, Cranes, Mazzy Star, P.J.Harvey, Heather Nova,
Leonard Cohen, Cowboy Junkies, Drugstore,
R.E.M., Screaming Blue Messiahs, Barefoot Contessa, Heidi Berry.
Films
I am pretty undemanding in the quality of films I enjoy, but I avoid
art films, disaster and feelgood movies and most Hollywood blockbusters.
A few favourite films: Breakfast at Tiffany's, Dogma, Strange Days,
Blade Runner, Seven Samurai, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon,
Das Boot, Charade, Pulp Fiction, Usual Suspects, Unforgiven,
Fierce Creatures, Seven, Grosse Point Blank, A Fish Called Wanda.
Reading
Favourite authors:
C. J. Cherryh, Ian Banks, Tanith Lee, Richard Dawkins, Scott Adams,
Bertrand Russell, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett,
Neil Gainman, William Gibson, Robert Pirsig, Hunter S Thompson, Bill Bryson.
I also read various eclectic non-fiction, particularly:
Military history and theory
Philosophy and psychology (lightweight stuff only)
Business process theory
Digital photography
I am a keen amateur Photographer
Games
I play quite a few games, including:
Board Games, such as chess, and go, and other more complex strategy/war games
Collectable card games (CCGS) such as 'Magic: the Gathering' and 'Shadowfist'
Wargaming
- simulating historical or finctional battles with miniature figures
Role-playing games
- currently only D&D, used to play lots of others too
